Alcohol: Single Malt
Single malt refers to the process of making a single malt liquor. It is a painstaking process that requires much work and patience. This is mainly done in different regions of Scotland where the proper barley can grow.
Once they have hand selected the barely, they have to add water to it so that it will sprout. These sprouts are the main ingredient to making this classic spirit. Once they have sprouted, they are put into a kiln to be dried by fire. This will add a rich smoky flavor to the barley.
The kilning and sprouting process is how they malt the barley. Once it is malted, they then add it to warm water and yeast. This will then be ready for fermenting. After the fermentation process is over, the resulting liquor will not be whiskey or scotch, but it will be around 70% alcohol.
Final Single Malt Step
The liquid is then poured into a cask, or a barrel. There it will sit for a minimum of three years. After the three years are up, it can be called a whisky. Most single malts will be in the cask for much longer than three years so that they can get that rich flavor and full body.
